Once again it's time to turn thoughts to heading south to Lake Powell for the annual transition from Idaho winter to something more inviting.  Unfortunately infestation of Lake Powell by invasive mussels has increased the probability of spreading invasives as well as likely impacts to water quality, fisheries productivity, and infrastructure.  The spread of invasive mussels to Lake Powell could have been better managed by implementing simple techniques at Lake Mead.  Surrounding states provided funding for boat wash stations and information and outreach.  Years after this funding had been provided these protection measures had not been implemented.  In fact the focus remained on washing boats that were entering the already infested reservoir without requiring boats leaving Lake Mead be cleaned, drained, and dried.  Subsequently mussels were detected in neighboring Lake Powell and the cycle continues.
